Qld: Beattie urges Queenslanders to mark September 11

BRISBANE, Aug 31 AAP - Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has called on Queenslandersto mark the first anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Mr Beattie wants drivers to turn on their headlights at 8.47am (AEST) on September11, the time in America when the first hijacked passenger plane hit New York's World TradeCentre.

"Australian school teacher Paul Gyulavary lost his twin brother in the tragedy andhas suggested motorists should turn on their lights," Mr Beattie said.

"I would ask all drivers to join in this very visible tribute."

Mr Beattie also encouraged Queenslanders to observe a minute's silence at 11am (AEST)on September 11.

"Wherever you are at 11am, from school rooms to board rooms, I urge all Queenslanders,young and old, to reflect on the need for peace."
