Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE has met with a Chinese trade delegation snubbed byGold Coast City Council over fears of the SARS virus.

Council representatives were originally to meet the delegation from Guangxi province,in south-western China.

But Gold Coast Mayor GARY BAILDON says Queensland Health advised him against it becauseof fears of the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

Mr BEATTIE met the delegates today at his Brisbane office, together with officialsincluding Queensland Health director-general ROB STABLE.

The premier told the delegation, led by provincial vice-governor SUN YU, there's alot of ignorance about SARS and he wants to demonstrate Queensland's friendship with China.

Vice-Governor SUN said through a translator he's grateful for the meeting.

Dr STABLE says the department's advice is there was no need to avoid a meeting withthe delegation.

Mr BEATTIE's visiting China later this year on a trade mission.
