AAP National News Wire Round-Up for Midday, Aug 5
Midday Round-Up: HIGHLIGHTS OF THE AAP RTV FILE AT 1130

Aust Stocks (SYDNEY)

Stock markets have fallen around the world over rising fears of another economic downturn
and the Australian share market has followed suit, falling by around four per cent at
today's open.

Banks dropped sharply, with ANZ shares falling by more than five per cent, Westpac
and National Australia Bank by more than four per cent, and Commonwealth Bank by more
than two per cent.

At 10.13am (AEST), the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 168.6 points, or 3.94 per
cent, at 4,107.9, while the broader All Ordinaries index fell 180.6 points, or by 4.149
per cent, to 4,172.3.

On the ASX 24, the September share price index futures contract was down 159 points
at 4,083 with 23,012 contracts traded.

Economy Swan (BRISBANE)

Federal Treasurer WAYNE SWAN says moved to reassure the markets, saying Australia's
on stronger economic ground than Europe and the United States.

Shortly after the local market opened down this morning, Mr SWAN told reporters Australians
shouldn't forget the nation's economic credentials are among the strongest in the developed
world.

He says there's a world of difference between the situation here and that in Europe and the US.

Boat (CANBERRA)

The United Nations' children's agency says it's extremely concerned that unaccompanied
minors may be deported from Christmas Island under Labor's asylum seeker swap deal with
Malaysia.

The first boatload of people to be sent back overseas arrived on Christmas Island yesterday.

Immigration Minister CHRIS BOWEN says there are 36 adults and 19 people who are either
clearly, or claiming to be, minors.

Fourteen of the children are unaccompanied and UNICEF Australia is calling on Mr BOWEN
NOT to send them to Malaysia for processing.

Freeman (SYDNEY)

Kings Cross night club owner ADAM FREEMAN's expected to front Sydney's Central Local
Court later today, to face drug related charges after being extradited from Thailand.

The 28-year-old son of the late underworld figure GEORGE FREEMAN left Australia in
December, after a friend was allegedly caught with twenty kilograms of ecstasy.

New South Wales police today confirmed Mr FREEMAN was escorted by police on a flight
from Thailand early this morning, to face charges over the alleged manufacture and supply
of amphetamines worth more than three million dollars.

Tiger (MELBOURNE)

Singapore-based Tiger Airways says it's never considered pulling the plug on its Australian
operations as it continues to be suspended from the air for safety reasons.

Newly-installed group chief executive CHIN YAU SENG says the company remains confident
that Tiger will fly again in Australia and win back passengers.

Tiger's been grounded since July 1 for safety reasons, after two incidents where pilots
approached Tullamarine and Avalon airports at too low an altitude, and concerns over issues
like pilot training and aircraft operations.

Retail Hockey (SYDNEY)

Federal opposition treasury spokesman JOE HOCKEY says the Australian retail sector
needs greater flexibility, with shops allowed to open through the night to compete with
online rivals.

The domestic retail sector is under the pump with latest data showing retail spending
down 0.1 per cent in June, the second consecutive month of decline.

A growth in online sales is said to be partly to blame.

Beckett (SYDNEY)

ROSEANNE BECKETT says it's ludicrous she must prove her innocence after murder convictions
against her were quashed after spending 10 years in jail.

Ms BECKETT, formerly CATT, is suing the NSW government for compensation, claiming she
was maliciously prosecuted.

A NSW Supreme Court judge today ruled that she must first prove her innocence in relation
to five charges, which the Director of Public Prosecutions dropped after the Court of
Criminal Appeal said they should be re-tried.

Outside court, Ms BECKETT said she plans to appeal, adding it's ludicrous the DPP and
the crown are again asking her to prove her innocence after a court found she'd been conspired
against.

US Rocca (LOS ANGELES)

Former AFL star SAV ROCCA is in legal hot water in the US and it has nothing to do
with his work visa problems.

A woman has filed a lawsuit against ROCCA and his former NFL team, the Philadelphia
Eagles, claiming she suffered severe, diverse and permanent injuries two years ago after
ROCCA called for a ball he kicked into the stands to be thrown back to him.

DEBRA A CAMPANA'S lawyers say the Eagles were careless in not having procedures and
personnel in place to return footballs from the stands.

ROCCA, who now plays with the Washington Redskins, has been stranded in Australia unable
to secure a US work visa.

BRIEFLY IN OTHER NEWS:

US Babies (READING)

In the United States, a woman who says she secretly gave birth to five babies in her

an ambulance in the car park of a Brisbane health clinic.

Lautner (SYDNEY)

Twilight star TAYLOR LAUTNER is heading to Australia to promote his new movie Abduction.

IN FINANCE:

At 1107 AEST, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 was DOWN 165.8 points at 4,110.7, while the
broader All Ords was 181.1 points LOWER at 4,171.8.

The Australian dollar was at 104.61 US cents, DOWN from 106.89 US cents at close yesterday.

It was at 74.22 euro cents, DOWN from 74.6 euro cents at yesterday's close.

The price of spot gold in Sydney is $US1,644.10 per fine ounce, DOWN $19.20 from yesterday's
local close of $US1,663.30 per ounce.

IN SPORT:

RL Titans (BRISBANE)

Premiership winner and Dally M medallist PRESTON CAMPBELL has had a change of heart
and announced he will retire at the end of the 2011 NRL season.

The Gold Coast Titans veteran initially said he wanted to help the likely wooden spooners
rebuild next season.

However, CAMPBELL has changed his mind ... telling teammates this morning he will bow
out at the end of this his 14th year in the NRL.

CAMPBELL has played 262 NRL matches, including 98 for the Titans.

He made his first grade debut in 1998 for the now defunct Gold Coast Chargers ... before
winning a Dally M with Cronulla and a title with Penrith.

Gol PGA (AKRON, OHIO)

Australian are dominating the leaderboard with ADAM SCOTT closing to within one stroke
of compatriot and leader JASON DAY at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational PGA event at Firestone
Country Club in Ohio.

DAY hit a sublime seven-under-par 63 with seven birdies, with SCOTT at six-under through
14 holes thanks.

TIGER WOODS is one-under-par through 15 holes in his comeback from injury.

WC14 Aust (BRISBANE)

account payee only Words printed between two vertical lines in the centre of a UK cheque that, in accordance with the Cheque Act 1992, make the cheque non-transferable. This is to avoid cheques being endorsed and paid into an account other than that of the payee, although it should be noted that banks may argue in some circumstances that they acted in good faith and without negligence if an endorsed cheque is honoured by the bank. In spite of this most cheques are now overprinted ‘account payee only’, and the words ‘not negotiable’ are sometimes added.

NSW:Laser pointed at aircraft over Sydney

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - There's been another incident in which a laser light was directed
at a passenger aircraft in Sydney, and police have called on the public to help find who's
responsible.

Police say the incident happened at about 7.15pm (AEST) on Saturday as an aircraft
was descending towards Sydney Airport.

They say a green-coloured laser was pointed at the aircraft, apparently from Canterbury
in Sydney's inner west.

Police sent vehicles to the area and inquiries are continuing.

Pointing lasers at an aircraft is illegal and dangerous, with Detective Inspector Michael
O'Rourke from Ashfield Local Area Command saying such action can endanger lives.

Fed: Ministers failed to get exit strategy from US: Bishop

By Stephen Johnson

CANBERRA, April 11 AAP - Two Rudd government ministers failed to get an exit strategy
from Afghanistan when they met US cabinet secretaries in Washington, the federal opposition
says.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith and Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon met with their
US counterparts, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defence Robert Gates,
on Friday in Washington as part of the Australia-United States Ministerial (AUSMIN) talks.

Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop said the ministers failed to extract
a possible exit strategy from Afghanistan from the US at the talks.

"It was an ideal opportunity, with Mr Smith and Mr Fitzgibbon meeting the Secretary
of State and the Secretary of Defence, yet we're none the wiser to any extent about an
increased commitment the US is expecting of Australia," Ms Bishop told AAP.

"Australia would want to hear from the (US) government what they had in mind."

Ms Bishop said Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had campaigned on an exit strategy from Iraq,
and needed to do the same with Afghanistan.

Mr Fitzgibbon said this week Australia would not commit more troops to Afghanistan
unless NATO increased its commitment and the US outlined a new strategy to fight the Taliban
insurgents.

Ms Bishop agreed NATO had failed to provide adequate support in the Afghanistan war.

NSW: Move away from private colleges for quality public schools

Increased living costs .. including rising interest rates .. are believed to be partly
responsible for a shift away from Sydney's expensive private colleges in favour of good
public schools.

The Daily Telegraph reports enrolment figures dating back to 2003 show a move toward
public schools .. with good reputations and strong academic results.

The biggest jump in kindergarten enrolments in the past five years went to south west
Sydney public school Dalmeny .. with 69 more new students in 2008 than in 2003.

Canley Vale High School .. in the same Sydney area .. had the greatest increase in
Year seven enrolments during the same period.

The paper says in some areas .. public schools have doubled their student intakes ..

with the shift in school selection also attributed to a focus on specialist subjects ..

such as sports, art, music and dance.

Digital Identity Leaders to Gather in Washington, DC to Advance Trusted Identity Assurance Levels

WIRELESS NEWS-January 22, 2008-Digital Identity Leaders to Gather in Washington, DC to Advance Trusted Identity Assurance Levels (C)2008 10Meters - http://www.10meters.com

Liberty Alliance, the global identity consortium working to build a more trusted internet for consumers, governments and businesses worldwide, announced the first public face-to-face meeting of the Liberty Alliance Identity Assurance Special Interest Group (IASIG) taking place on Wednesday, January 30 from 10 am - 5 pm in Washington, DC.
The public meeting brings together identity leaders representing a wide range of industries to collaborate on defining standardized assessment criteria and accreditation rules for the new Liberty Alliance Identity Assurance Certification Program scheduled for launch during 2Q of this year.

The meeting will be led by Brett McDowell, executive director of Liberty Alliance and Russ Cutler, editor of the Liberty Identity Assurance Framework (IAF). The IAF fills cross-industry requirements for baseline identity assurance policy standards for all public and private sector federations. Based on the Electronic Authentication Partnership Trust Framework derived from the NIST Special Publication 800-63 and now enhanced and updated by Liberty's Identity Assurance Expert Group (IAEG), the IAF defines four identity assurance levels. Individuals attending the January 30 meeting will have the opportunity to participate in defining the requirements federating organizations will need to meet to become certified on each of the four levels of assurance.

"The IAF provides federation operators with business and policy standards for more easily making trust decisions about the acceptance and management of identity credentials within their respective federations," said McDowell. "The January 30 meeting in Washington, DC is open to all individuals interested in advancing trusted identity federations based on standardized and certified identity assurance levels."

The public event will include members of the Liberty Alliance Identity Assurance Expert Group (IAEG) and corresponding public Identity Assurance Special Interest Group (IASIG) as well as federation operators and stakeholders involved in building and deploying trusted inter-federations. The meeting will take place at the US GSA, 1800 F Street NW, Conference Room 5141A, Washington, DC.

Qld: Emergency staff warned against appearing in political ads

Queensland's top ambulance officer has warned staff against appearing in political
advertisements .. after questions were raised about them posing in a brochure for Labor
leader KEVIN RUDD.

Opposition Leader JEFF SEENEY has attacked the the brochure and forwarded it to Queensland's
integrity commissioner.

Mr SEENEY claims the BEATTIE government is in breach of its own code of conduct ..

after it warned SES volunteers against wearing their uniform at anti-council amalgamation
rallies.

Premier PETER BEATTIE says Mr SEENEY's being hypocritical .. after the coalition used
emergency services staff in its own ads.

But he admits the government's policy is NOT to have emergency service personnel in
uniform .. appearing in political campaigns.

Mr BEATTIE says Ambulance Service Commissioner JIM HIGGINS has issued a number of directives

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) _ Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday rejected a possible European offer for incentives, including a light-water nuclear reactor, in return for allaying fears about his country's nuclear program by giving up uranium enrichment. "Do you think you are dealing with a 4-year-old child to whom you can give some walnuts and chocolates and get gold from him?" Ahmadinejad told thousands of people in a speech in central Iran.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) _ The Palestinians' defiant Hamas-led government sent a new militant force into the streets of Gaza on Wednesday, disregarding President Mahmoud Abbas' order banning the creation of the security body and raising the stakes in their deepening power struggle. Hamas appeared to have been propelled into action by mysterious drive-by shootings that killed two of its militants in the Gaza Strip hours earlier. These and other recent cases of deadly infighting have threatened to plunge the Palestinian territories into bloody chaos.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia (AP) _ Mount Merapi shot a large cloud of searing hot ash and gas into the sky Wednesday, ending two days of relative calm and underscoring the dangers still facing thousands of people living on the volcano's slopes. Witnesses said the eruption appeared to be smaller than the mountain's most violent sputterings Monday, when ash and gas clouds surged around 2 1/2 miles from the peak and triggered panic.

CANNES, France (AP) _ "The Da Vinci Code" drew lukewarm praise, shrugs of indifference, some jeering laughter and a few derisive jabs Tuesday from arguably the world's toughest movie crowd: critics at the Cannes Film Festival. The year's most anticipated movie, "The Da Vinci Code" was a generally faithful adaptation of Dan Brown's monster best seller, spinning a murder thriller that stems from a cover-up of secrets about Christianity's roots.

Foundstone Offers First `'Hands On'' Cyber Crime Class for Lawyers; First Class in New York City on Feb. 9.

Legal & Education Writers

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 3, 2001

Foundstone Inc., the premier provider of security services and education, Wednesday announced a new series of "Ultimate Hacking: Hands On" security classes designed specifically for lawyers, "Understanding Cyber Attacks."

[pilcrow (paragraph sign)] These classes are taught from the perspective of "white hat" hackers and a cyber crime prosecutor. The class provides hands-on experience, demonstrating how Internet-based crime can be conducted and what federal statutes apply to each of these actions.

An "Understanding Cyber Attacks" class will be held in New York starting on Feb. 9, with additional classes scheduled in 2001 for San Jose on March 9, Washington D.C. on May 11, and New York City on June 8. An application for accreditation of this course in New York and California is currently pending.

Instructors for the class include Kevin Mandia, a recognized computer forensics expert and Marc Zwillinger, a former cyber crime prosecutor. They will bring real world stories to the class, and discuss first hand the technical details of the cases they were involved in and the legal issues they encountered.

"With the proliferation of e-commerce and the Internet, computer crime is becoming more common and more costly. Lawyers need sufficient technical training to prevent, minimize, and effectively recoup losses from cyber crime," said Zwillinger, partner at Kirkland & Ellis. "This is the first time lawyers will be able to obtain this type of training while earning continuing education credits."

"Most computer crimes are activities already prohibited by law, such as theft of intellectual property and child pornography," explained Mandia, director of computer forensics at Foundstone. "Although there are ties to common legal concepts, computer networks present complex legal issues that require a thorough understanding of the law as well as the technical understanding of networks."

Participants will learn how to launch the most recent computer attacks against systems in the classroom, and sort out the legal issues on the spot. Specific topics will include: Introduction to Networking, Network Regulations, Identifying Cyber Threats & Legal Ramifications, The Role of Legal Policy in Preventing and Limiting Losses, and Review of Laws Regulating Electronic Information.

"The Ultimate Hacking: Hands On -- Understanding Cyber Attacks" class is one day, limited to 30 people, and costs $750. Classes include an individual dual-boot Windows NT/Linux laptop for use during the course, use of the lab network and computers, class handouts, and a CD-ROM with course tools and scripts. To sign up visit the Foundstone Web site at www.foundstone.com/law.

Market Price returns are based on the midpoint of the bid/ask spread. Returns are average annualized total returns, except those for periods of less than one year, which are cumulative. The fund's performance reflects fee waivers and expense reimbursements, absent which performance would have been lower. After-tax returns are calculated using the historical highest individual federal marginal income tax rates and do not reflect the impact of state and local taxes. Actual after-tax returns depend on the investor's tax situation and may differ from those shown. The after-tax returns shown are not relevant to investors who hold their fund shares through tax-deferred arrangements such as 401(k) plans or individual retirement accounts.

2Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Performance information for the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index(SM) is for illustrative purposes only and does not represent actual fund performance. No representation is being made that any investment will achieve performance similar to that shown. Principal Risk Factors

The fund's shares will change in value, and you could lose money by investing in the fund. One of the principal risks of investing in the fund is market risk. Market risk is the risk that a particular stock owned by the fund, fund shares or stocks in general may fall in value.

The fund's return may not match the return of the Dow Jones Internet Composite Index(SM). The fund may not be fully invested at times. Securities held by the fund will generally not be bought or sold in response to market fluctuations. The fund may invest in small capitalization and mid capitalization companies. Such companies may experience greater price volatility than larger, more established companies.

Investors buying or selling fund shares on the secondary market may incur customary brokerage commissions. Investors who sell fund shares may receive less than the share's net asset value. Shares may be sold throughout the day on the exchange through any brokerage account. However, shares may only be redeemed directly from the fund by authorized participants, in very large creation/redemption units.

The fund is concentrated in stocks of companies in the technology sector. You should be aware that an investment in a portfolio which is concentrated in a particular sector involves additional risks, including limited diversification. The companies engaged in the technology sector are subject to fierce competition, high research and development costs, and their products and services may be subject to rapid obsolescence.

The fund invests in the securities of Internet companies. Internet companies are subject to rapid changes in technology, worldwide competition, rapid obsolescence of products and services, loss of patent protections, cyclical market patterns, evolving industry standards and frequent new product introductions. The fund's investment in Internet companies may also be subject to the risk of owning small capitalization companies that have recently begun operations.

The fund is classified as "non-diversified." A non-diversified fund generally may invest a larger percentage of its assets in the securities of a smaller number of issuers. As a result, the fund may be more susceptible to the risks associated with these particular companies, or to a single economic, political or regulatory occurrence affecting these companies.

The Morningstar Rating(TM) is provided for those exchange-traded funds ("ETFs") with at least a three-year history. Ratings are based on the ETF's Morningstar Risk-Adjusted Return measure which accounts for variation in monthly performance, placing more emphasis on downward variations and rewarding consistent performance. An ETF's risk-adjusted return includes a brokerage commission estimate. This estimate is intended to reflect what an average investor would pay when buying or selling an ETF. PLEASE NOTE, this estimate is subject to change and the actual brokerage commission an investor pays may be higher or lower than this estimate. Morningstar compares each ETF's risk-adjusted return to the open-end mutual fund rating breakpoints for that category. Consistent with the open-end mutual fund ratings, the top 10% of ETFs in each category receive 5 stars, the next 22.5% receive 4 stars, the next 35% receive 3 stars, the next 22.5% receive 2 stars and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. The overall rating for an ETF is based on a weighted average of the time-period ratings (e.g., the ETF's 3, 5, and 10 year rating). The determination of an ETF's rating does not affect the retail open end mutual fund data published by Morningstar. Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Liquidity Services, Inc. to Acquire TruckCenter.com.

Acquisition adds leading marketplace and notable client base of Fortune 500 sellers of transportation capital assets

WASHINGTON -- Liquidity Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: LQDT), today announced it has agreed to acquire TruckCenter.com in an all-cash transaction. A leading online auction marketplace for fleet and transportation equipment, TruckCenter.com brings expertise and focused services that optimize value for commercial fleet owners and equipment leasing institutions in addition to serving as a core source of surplus transportation equipment for an active buyer base. TruckCenter.com currently serves a notable client base including GE Capital, Bank of America and Wal-Mart and will operate as part of Liquidity Services' Commercial Asset Recovery Division.

The acquisition strengthens Liquidity Services' overall business in the growing transportation industry vertical. LSI will add over 200 new commercial sellers of transportation assets, a critical mass of registered buyers of fleet, rolling stock and other transportation equipment, and five permanent facilities to support the national service required within this industry vertical. The storage facilities are located in the areas of Los Angeles, CA; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Atlanta, GA; Indianapolis, IN; and New Castle, DE.

"Transportation assets are an increasingly important category in our business with sales of approximately $100 million annually. With the addition of TruckCenter.com, we are excited to further expand this vertical and provide an enhanced solution for Liquidity Services' and TruckCenter.com's impressive base of clients and buyers," said Bill Angrick, Chairman and CEO of Liquidity Services. "As we continue to grow our commercial and public sector business, the expertise and services of TruckCenter.com will allow Liquidity Services to strengthen our position for existing and new clients, as the leading marketplace for transportation assets and surplus goods and equipment in general."

"We are excited to join Liquidity Services and combine our industry-leading services to provide the most robust solution for the management and sale of surplus transportation assets," said Jerry Connolly, CEO of TruckCenter.com. "Liquidity Services' expansive base of 1.5 million registered buyers, technology expertise and value-added services will help increase recovery value and shorten the sales cycle for our selling clients while also providing easier access to a broader range of products for our buying customers."

Liquidity Services expects the deal to add approximately $50 million of annual Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) and, excluding one-time deal expenses, to be neutral to its fiscal year 2011 earnings results and two cents per diluted share accretive to its fiscal 2012 results.

The acquisition is expected to close in June 2011 and is subject to customary closing conditions and post-closing price adjustments related to working capital items. Terms of the deal include an upfront payment of approximately $9 million in cash plus additional cash payments of up to $9 million based on TruckCenter.com's future revenues and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) performance over a 24 month period after closing.
